Spey Bay Mussel Farm, 57 41.611N 003 06.254W all the way to 57 41.598N 003 05.788W, is focused on providing high-quality farmed sea foods from the world renowned pristine Spey Bay in bonny Scotland. The days of hunting for wild fish are numbered, this sustainable farm with the highest eco friendly credentials will provide employment and a wonderful produce for years to come.
The Mussel Farm is a new venture in relatively open water, the main problem we face is a very strong current and swell, the mussels thrive in this, but the logistics involved are daunting. We have developed -after many sea trials and local knowledge provided by traditional salmon netters - an innovative mooring anchor that will hopefully meet the challenges of this powerful environment and provide a benign ecosystem for shellfish.
All our results, water flow, sea temperature gradient, salinity and harvest yield will be available freely to all on this website.
Mussels are an ever more popular choice as a seafood, they have formed a major natural part of the human diet for millions of years, and are tasty and extremely nutritious too. There are plenty of outlets for this wonderful product, there is no competition, as the market is ever expanding. The Belgians eat 500 times more mussels than the British, as a nation of seafarers and adventurous epicures we will achieve parity with them!
ECOLOGY
This mussel farm will also provide a wonderful habitat for lobsters crabs razors and cockles, all will be farmed sustainably, we do want this to be a long term project, revitalising the Moray Firth as a nursery for juvenile white fish in this artificial "kelp forest" which harbours salmon before they make their dash up the rivers Spey and Lossie and, of course, providing a valuable industry for our own future generations.
Mussel farms are recognised as a wonderful way to clean the water, providing a fine habitat for many other species. A recent report suggests the use of mussel ropes beside farmed salmon cages to significantly reduce the pollution caused by the confined fish. This will be investigated by the Spey Bay Mussel Farm Company, and we will look at providing the gear and personnel for a trial.
